Lakewood Ranch High softball Head Coach T. J. Goelz took a long look at the scoreboard after the Mustangs' 8-2 win Saturday against Lake Brantley High in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 7A state championship, then shook his head.

Jesuit baseball was not to be denied this postseason. The Tigers blasted their way through Class 5A Region 2 play, outscoring three opponents by an absurd total of 40-3. Run differentials weren’t as staggering at the state tournament in Fort Myers, but Jesuit still captured the program’s sixth championship in impressive fashion.

The North Broward Prep Eagles completed their quest to claim back-to-back state titles on Wednesday afternoon. After leading the 4A class a year ago, the Eagles finish as Florida’s best 3A team in 2022 following a 5-3 victory over the Berkeley Prep Buccaneers. The win caps off an up and down season that tested the Eagles in every way imaginable, including a rough spot in March where the club went 3-5 over a 14-day period.

All five South Shore high schools participated in the 2022 Spring Football Jamboree last Thursday. The jamborees are an annual affair in football-crazy Florida. Actually, each jamboree lasts for only two quarters or a half of a game, for each team.

It’s hard to find the bright spot in a season-ending loss. Too much time, too much work, and too many emotions go into the effort. To fall short sometimes means the recovery may take some time.

Miami Christian manager Chris Cuadra came back to his alma mater with a plan. The 2005 graduate, took over the program in 2013, with the hopes of winning a state title for his school. In 2013, the team went 7-15, in 2014 they were 8-15, in 2015 the turnaround had begun when they finished 13-13.
