Head Coach

Steve Gawriluk

Coach Gawriluk has lifelong ties to the CUDA-NATION. He grew up in Edgewater, attending local schools and watching his two older brothers compete for the Cudas. While in high school Gawriluk competed in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country and Track and graduated with honors in 1979. His passion for basketball took him to Due West, SC for an opportunity to walk-on at Erskine College but after realizing his competitive playing days were over, he left after a year. For the next three years Gawriluk worked as a manager and student assistant for the Florida State University men’s basketball program. After graduation Gawriluk took a job teaching and coaching at Meadowbrook Junior High in Orlando. The following year brought him back to his alma mater and he started an eight year stint as an assistant basketball coach for the Barracudas and Coach Roy Lee. In 1994 Gawriluk left NSBHS to become an assistant basketball coach at Embry-Riddle University. During his tenure under the legendary NAIA Hall of Fame Coach Steve Ridder, Gawriluk was part of nine Sun Conference Championships, six straight trips to the NAIA National Tournament and the 1999-2000 NAIA National Basketball Champions. In the spring of 2008 Coach Gawriluk was offered the opportunity to once again return to New Smyrna Beach High School as the Head Basketball Coach of the Cudas. During his tenure at NSBHS the Cudas qualified for the state playoffs in 2012 as the district runner-up. The following year the Cudas won their first District championship in 13 years and advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the state playoffs. He is married to Laurie, a Physical Education teacher at Silver Sands Middle School in Port Orange.

Assistant Coach

Ryan Dickey

Coach Ryan Dickey enters his 6th year as an assistant at New Smyrna Beach High School. A New Smyrna Beach alumni, Coach Dickey lead the Cudas to it's first ever trip to the State Final Four in his sophomore season as a player in 1998. He has been Coach Gawriluk’s top assistant for the last two seasons and is charge of directing the team’s defensive system. Prior to joining the Barracuda program, Dickey was well known for his basketball coaching on the travel circuit with the development of ” Team 360”. He still is involved with that youth program which is a feeder system for the New Smyrna Beach Middle School basketball program.

Isabel A McLaughlin

Isabel enters her first year as a member of the Barracuda basketball staff. Her primary responsibility this season is keeping the scorebook at games and compiling stats to send to the media. McLaughlin is a 1975 graduate of NSBHS and was involved in groundbreaking girls sports programs at the high school level at that time. She was also involved in surfing and competed nationally. She is still an avid surfer. After college, she returned to her alma mater to teach Science for over 30 years. She coached the Cuda softball team for many years and was the longtime sponsor of the school yearbook . At the end of the 2014-15 school year she retired from the Volusia County School System .

Jackie Hubbard

Coach Hubbard is entering her 3rd year with the basketball program at NSBHS. Coach Hubbard served as an assistant to Coach James Henry during the 2011-2012 season but she and her family moved away after the school year. Coach Hubbard was away from the game during this time but she and her family missed the beach and began looking for an opportunity to return to the area. She quickly jumped back into the swing of things, as fate would have it Coach Henry was looking for an assistant again. Coach Hubbard leads the JV program and still assist Coach Henry with the Varsity program. She is a former prep basketball player at Herndon High school in Herndon, VA. Coach Hubbard graduated from Radford University in Virginia and has lived in Florida for a total of 8 years.

Coach James Henry is entering his fifth year as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at New Smyrna Beach High School. For the 2014 – 2015 season, Coach Henry led the Cudas to a 23-5 overall record advancing to the Sweet-16 in Class 6A. The Cudas were the District 5-6A regular season and tournament champions. Coach Henry was named Five Star Conference Coach of the Year for all female winter sports. The cudas currently have all players returning for the 2015-16 season. His motto: Less is best and you will always keep your opponent guessing.

Gerald Fuller

Gerald Fuller is a proud graduate of the Class of 2005 of Bethune Cookman University!! He has been a basketball coach and social studies teacher for 10 years (8 at New Smyrna Beach High School) and is excited and humbled to be returning as the athletic director to the place that he considers home. Coach Fuller is married to Tiffany Fuller, who is also a Volusia County educator, and has a 1 year old son, Trenton Fuller. “I believe that athletics is an important part of the education of our students because it teaches our student athletes the benefits of hard work, commitment and selflessness.” When our athletes leave New Smyrna Beach High School we want them be leaders in our society who model these qualities that we build our athletic program on. Go Cudas!!!
