Volusia County middle school and high school student-athletes will be offered free electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings for the first time this summer in addition to the annual state-required sports physical. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among high school athletes, with an estimate of 1 in 300 student-athletes having an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk.   The goal of the screenings, approved Tuesday by the Volusia County School Board in partnership with AdventHealth, is early detection and treatment of heart abnormalities.

The Deland Bulldogs proved they were the top dog against the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs in their 10-2 softball victory on Tuesday night, April 27, 2021. A strong pitching game by Deland’s Luci Walters was on full display with zero walks, four strikeouts, and only five hits relinquished over seven innings of play. In the bottom of the second, Deland loaded the bases and went up 4-0 courtesy of hits by Brooke Evans, Abbygael Burnette, Anna Marie Haverty, and a walk by Mackenzie Hoffman.

What started out as a defensive battle turned into a seven-overtime thriller between Spruce Creek and DeLand in a District 3-2A flag football semifinal. The Hawks won, 49-43, and will play New Smyrna Beach on Friday night, April 23, at 7 p. m.
