Wednesday night, the Spruce Creek Hawks hosted the Merritt Island Mustangs in a hometown showdown non-conference game. The Mustangs chalked up the first score of the game at the top of the second off Michael Baumgardner’s homer on a fly ball to left field. In the top of the fourth, Anthony Cartagena singled to third then proceeded to steal second, advance to third, and score with Meric Collins at bat. Down 3-0, Spruce Creek made a tremendous three-inning comeback effort with Brandon Neely’s double in the fifth that sent Evan Mastromauro home and Trent Godawa’s score on a first baseman error in the sixth bringing the score to 3-2 Mustangs. Merritt Island Junior Brady Denaburg’s score off Anthony Cartagena’s single in the seventh increased Merritt Island’s lead to 4-2. With Spruce Creek facing two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Luke Bentley made a sacrifice fly sending Preston Wetherell home. Unable to score on the next at bat, the Hawks fell to the Mustangs with a final score of 4-3.
